What is SNAP
SNAP is a parent support group that was started in June 2011 for children with autism their parents and families. (Social Networking for children with Autism and their Parents) There are approximately 10 families meeting each week and the numbers are continuing to grow. It is an opportunity for parents to meet and chat in a relaxed atmosphere and have a cup of tea/coffee and biscuits. The children can play happily and we have very happy kids.
We meet informally every Saturday from 10:30am to 12:30pm. So far SNAP has been able to meet on a weekly basis due to the generosity of Jennymount Methodist Church allowing us to have access to the wonderful facilities there.
Key stages of childhood development include play and social learning, how to meet & greet, social rules dos and don’ts. Some children with ASD can become socially isolated finding it difficult to join in they need help and more time to learn what to do in some social situations. We aim to provide multiple opportunities for them to learn develop & practise the skills the rest of us take for granted.
We have had trips to Streamvale Farm, a Halloween Party, Funky Monkeys, W5, Cinema, Carnfunuck, Belfast Zoo, Donkey Sanctuary, Jubilee Party, Fun farm and the annual outing on the Santa Train from Belfast to Whitehead at Christmas. Visits from Fire & Ambulance services.
